New York Police are mourning the loss of one of their own after Veteran Officer Detective Brian Simonsen was accidentally shot and killed by another officer during a robbery at a T-Mobile store in the Richmond Hill section of Queens at around 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Simonsen, 42, was a 19-year veteran.
Another officer was shot in the leg and is in stable condition.
This tragic accident happened as both officers were firing at the suspect and while other officers were arriving at the scene to deal with a suspect that had just pointed a gun at police, reports KSFY.
Police say that the suspects past is a lengthy one as a career criminal. He was shot multiple times and is listed in stable condition.
Commissioner James P.O’Neil took to Twitter to share the heartbreaking news.
“Our hearts are broken again, because a career criminal put lives in jeopardy. Det. Brian Simonsen, 42, was a 19-year-veteran of the #NYPD. He lost his life fighting crime & keeping safe all the people we serve. The sympathies of all New Yorkers are with his family & colleagues”.
