The Weeknd

The Weeknd was born February 16th, 1990 as Abel Makkonen Tesfaye in Toronto, Canada. He is the son of Ethiopian immigrants, but has had almost no contact with his father after he left when Abel was a small child.

He began recording music in 2010 and in 2011, he released his mixtape House of Balloons. He later was featured on an album with Drake called Take Care. This is what helped him land a record deal with Univsersal’s Republic Records.

Since then, he has released such albums as Kiss Land (2013), Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), Starboy (2016), and his latest album, After Hours (2020).

Some of his best known songs are "The Hills", "Earned It", "Can’t Feel My Face", and "Starboy". During his career, he has collaborated with other artists such as Wiz Khalifa, Ariana Grande and Kendrick Lamar.

The Weeknd recently performed at the SuperBowl Halftime show in Tampa, Florida. A fun fact about the artist is that he has Ethipian roots.
