In Harlem a 21-year-old former high school basketball star was killed and six men and two women were shot during a mass shooting Sunday night around 12:35 a.m., as people were gathering for a barbecue near Fifth Avenue and East 39th Street, ABC7 reports.

The deceased victim has been identified as Darius Lee. He graduated from St. Raymond High School in 2019. Lee was transported to Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Five victims were discovered when police arrived and others drove themselves to the hospital. Some victims were shot in the torso, legs, back and fingers and are expected to recover.

One witness tells the station that they kept hearing many rounds of shots and thought it may have been fireworks.

It appears to be another senseless act of violence but police say it may have been gang related as they conduct their investigation. No suspects have been taken into custody and it’s believed to be multiple shooter’s.
