2 El Monte Police Officers and Suspect Shot and Killed

Update: The two officers who were killed in the line of duty have been identified as Corporal Michael Paredes and Officer Joseph Santana. Santana is survived by his wife, daughter, and twin boys, the city of El Monte said.⁠

Santana had just joined the El Monte police force after serving with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department for three years and had been out patrolling in El Monte for less than a year., NBCLA reports.⁠

Two El Monte police officers were shot dead Tuesday around 5:10 p.m., near the intersection of Garvey and Central Avenue, FOX News reports.

The suspect was shot and killed at the scene. Another suspect was placed in a patrol car.

The officers were responding to a domestic call when they were killed and pronounced dead at the County USC Medical Center.

A number of law enforcement agencies arrived at the scene to pay their respects.

LAPD is assisting the El Monte PD with the investigation. A press conference was scheduled for 9 p.m.
