Multiple fatalities have been reported after a car plowed through a crowd during a holiday parade in Wisconsin on Sunday. In Waukesha, a Christmas parade resumed for the first year since the pandemic began, bringing out politicians, bands, car clubs, community members, happy citizens, and everyone in between.

According to officials, a red S.U.V. stormed through barricades and into crowds of people, causing fatalities and injuring over 20 others that had to be taken to local hospitals. At this time, the number of fatalities are pending. Eyewitnesses report that the driver was a man;  while that has not been confirmed, Chief Daniel Thompson of the police department was able to confirm that the person of interest was in their custody.

At the scene, shots rang out as officers fired at the driver.

“Today our community faced horror and tragedy in what should have been a community celebration,” Mayor Shawn Reilly said in a statement. “I’m deeply saddened to know that so many in our community went to a parade but ended up dealing with injury and heartache.”

 An investigation is currently ongoing.
