Jermaine Lavanda Bass, 30 is accused of shooting a 5-year-old girl who died and her 8-year-old brother in the head multiple times after the mother tucked them into bed after rushing home from dinner around 10:30 p.m. According to reports, the kids ' mother left their bedroom to go to the bathroom, leaving them with their father when she heard gunshots.

County Sheriff Chad Chronister of Hillsborough was upset during a news conference on Tuesday morning after he recounted current events from Monday night in a home from Armature Gate Townhomes 1300 block of Heritage Club Drive in Tampa. The girl was pronounced dead while her older brother was critically injured during the attack.

Fearing for her own life, the mother immediately ran out of the house, when she saw her neighbor who had already dialed 911. Her husband Bass ran outside with their son who she had just tucked into bed. Bass said “call for help” according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff.

After deputies arrived at the scene they found Jermaine Lavanda Bass cradling his son telling the deputies it was an accident. The boy had gunshot wounds to his head, while deputy officers went upstairs, they found the little girl in her top bunk bed with gunshot wounds to the head as she lay in a puddle of blood. Sheriff Chronister told the media Tuesday morning, “This is a case and experience that no parent should have to live through and that no law enforcement officer or first responder should ever have to witness, we as a sheriff’s office are struggling today.”

Both children were taken to Tampa General Hospital, the girl died in the hospital and the boy remains in critical condition as of Tuesday, Chronister stated.

Bass is due in court and facing first-degree and attempted murder charges.
