A young woman was shot in her apartment early Wednesday morning. The police identified her as Natalia Monte Cox, a 21-year-old who is attending Hutson-Tillotson University. They confirmed that she was a senior at the school and studying biology to become an exotic animal veterinarian.
In the 911 call, they reported sounds of a door being kicked in then gunshots followed by a woman screaming. They also stated that someone was running away by getting into a car and leaving.
When police got there they noticed that the front door of the apartment had been forced open. Once they were inside they found Cox in one of the bedrooms with gunshot wounds on her body. After police tried to save her EMS to go over and assess her condition later pronouncing her dead around 3 AM. The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office.
Investigators are working on leads in order to find a possible suspect. As the case continues to stay open this will have been the 20th homicide for Austin this year.
