Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz dodged the death penalty in a Florida court Thursday after jurors recommended that he receive a life sentence in prison for killing 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February 2018.

Jurors came back with their recommendation of life without parole as the news stunned the victim's family who hoped for the death penalty after Cruz cold bloodily assassinated them and after pleading guilty to the 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder.

According to CNN, Parkland 14-year-old victim Gina Montalto’s father said it was just “another gut punch for families.”

Cruz will be sentenced on November 1 when the families can address him with their impact statements.
