Memphis Shooting Spree Leaves 4 Dead and 3 Wounded

At around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, a series of shootings occurred in Memphis, TN that continued to 4:30 p.m. and left four dead and three wounded.

According to the Memphis police, the 19-year-old suspect Ezekiel Dejuan Kelly was taken into custody and was apprehended at 9:20 p.m., over two hours after authorities warned city residents to stay indoors. Kelly was charged with first-degree murder early Thursday, according to NBC News.

The first victim was discovered at 12:56 a.m. and was deceased male Police Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis reported. The Memphis police found a man fatally shot in his vehicle at around 4:38 p.m., and a woman shot and wounded in the leg two minutes later. According to NBC, Kelly went into a store while on Facebook live and shot inside the store leaving another man hospitalized. 

Police received reports of the threatening Facebook live and tweet an alert to the people of Memphis about a suspect "responsible for multiple shootings." Soon after this, two more people were found killed. A woman was shot to death and the suspect fled with her vehicle at around 7:23 p.m., then a man was found shot and wounded around the same time. By 8:55 p.m., another woman had been fatally shot, according to Davis.

Kelly was caught in a high-speed chase after carjacking another person (who was not injured), and was removed from the Dodge Challenger and arrested without incident. Two weapons were in the car, Davis said.

The Memphis Police Department currently has not determined the suspect’s motive.
