Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, an 18-year-old Mexican boxer, died Thursday after suffering several blows to the head during her match against Marie-Pier Houle from Canada.

Zapata went unconscious in the ring during her fight against Houle at the IGA Stadium in Montreal on Saturday night when Houle landed several punches against her as she stood defenseless in the corner. A video from the fight shows Zapata struggling to stand after the bell rang. After her trainer rushed over she fell unconscious and began to convulse as medical staff surrounded her.

Zapata was confirmed dead by GYM Gala International Boxing event promoter Groupe Yvon Michel in a statement on Thursday. “It is with great sadness and torment that we learned, from a representative of her family, that Jeanette Zacarias passed away this afternoon at 3:45 p..m. We would like to offer our most sincere condolences to her family, loved ones, friends and especially her husband Jovanni Martinez who was at her bedside until her last moments.”

According to CBC, Zapata had to pass neurological exams in order to participate in the event after she was knocked out in May.

In a statement on Facebook, House wrote that she was devastated, saying “I extend my deepest condolences to her family and spouse Jovanni Martinez. Thank you for respecting my desire to not comment more.”
