Japanese American tennis superstar, Naomi Osaka will be in partnership with basketball legend, LeBron James and his business partner, Maverick Carter’s Spring Hill Company, as she will be launching her own media company.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Naomi and her agent and business partner, Stuart Duguid have launched a production banner by the name of Hana Kuma; Hana means flower and Kuma means bear in Japanese. The company has said they “will produce stories that are culturally specific but universal to all audiences; playful and bold in its approach to tackle important issues of society.” “There has been an explosion of creators of color finally being equipped with resources and a huge platform,” Osaka stated, “In the streaming age, content has a more global perspective. You can see this in the popularity of television from Asia, Europe and Latin America that the unique can also be universal. My story is a testament to that as well. I’m so excited for what we are building at Hana Kuma. We will bring stories to life with this goal in mind: to make unique perspectives feel universal and inspire people along the way.”

The company already has a slew of projects with one being a documentary at Epix and will have Osaka, James, and Carter as executive producer, says Sportico.

Their first official project under their banner will be MINK!, directed by Ben Proudfoot. The Op-Doc will be about Patsy Mink, the first woman of color to be elected to congress, and creator of Title IX.

The head of development will be Chavonne LeNoir who has worked at Disney and MGM.

Spring Hill will lend a helping hand to Hana Kuma by giving them resources in production, development, and other areas.

Hana Kuma said they want “to act as an incubator for athletes who want to create and story tell beyond their sport in creative, impactful and thought-provoking ways.”I'm
