Young Man Shot Fatally Near Ball State University Campus. 

MUNCIE,Ind.—Muncie police on Saturday were investigating an early morning slaying near Ball State University campus. 

 A large area, much of the 1300 block of West Abbott, just west of New York Avenue and a smaller portion of the street east of New York Avenue – was marked off with yellow crime-scene tape.  

The fatal shooting was at the 1300 block of West Abbott Street, was reported at 2:09 a.m. Members of the victim’s family had also arrived at the scene. 

About 3 a.m. three young women were standing at the northeast corner of Abbott and New York Avenue, one sobbing and repeatedly calling out a man’s name.  

Deputy Police Chief Melissa Pease said emergency dispatched has received a report of a “possible fight and shots fired” at that address.  

The victim, Montana Miquel Lopez, 22, who was reportedly shot in the neck has been pronounced dead at the scene, by 2:25 a.m.  

Lopez, formerly of Fort Wayne and Anderson now lived in Muncie. Pease reported he was a freshman at Ball State. 

Officers at times were attempting to preserved evidence while a light rain was falling.  

Several witnesses were taken to Muncie City Hall to be interviewed.  

An ambulance was called back to the scene about 4:30 a.m. to transport the victim’s remains to the morgue at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. Delaware County Coroner Rick Howell said an autopsy will be conducted Saturday.
